About Bartlett

A Brief History of Bartlett, Illinois

Bartlett, Illinois, located in Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties about 35 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, is a thriving suburb with a unique blend of rural heritage, residential growth, and cultural diversity. Once a small railroad stop on the prairie, Bartlett has grown into a vibrant village of over 40,000 people while preserving its small-town feel and commitment to community.

Native American Roots and Early Settlement

Before European settlers arrived, the land that would become Bartlett was home to Native American tribes, primarily the Potawatomi. The area’s dense woods, open prairies, and abundant waterways provided food, shelter, and travel routes. Native populations were gradually displaced following the Treaty of Chicago in 1833, opening the land to settlers from the eastern United States and Europe.

In the mid-1800s, German immigrants began settling in the region, drawn by the area’s fertile farmland and opportunities for a new life. Among the earliest and most influential settlers was Luther Bartlett, a Chicago businessman who purchased land in the area and later donated land to the railroad that would run through the village.

The Railroad and Bartlett’s Founding

Bartlett’s development was directly tied to the expansion of the railroad. In 1873, the Chicago & Pacific Railroad (later part of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad) extended its line through the area. Luther Bartlett donated land for a station and rail yard, and in return, the stop was named “Bartlett.”

The presence of the railroad transformed the area from farmland into a small but growing community. It allowed local farmers to transport goods to Chicago markets and made Bartlett a desirable place to live for those who wanted to commute to the city or operate businesses nearby.

Bartlett was officially incorporated in 1891, with a population of just under 300 people. In its early years, the village featured basic services, general stores, a post office, and schools. The local economy was primarily agricultural, with dairy farming, grain production, and livestock raising playing key roles.

Early 20th Century: A Rural Village

Through the early 1900s, Bartlett remained a small, close-knit, rural community. Daily life centered around farming, the railroad, and the village’s modest downtown area. Churches, schools, and civic organizations formed the heart of local culture.

In 1894, the Bartlett Volunteer Fire Department was founded, and in 1896, the Bartlett Public Library opened as a community-run resource. These early institutions helped establish the village’s strong civic identity.

While neighboring suburbs began to grow more rapidly after World War I, Bartlett retained its rural atmosphere well into the mid-20th century. The village’s location—farther from Chicago than many other suburbs—helped delay major development for several decades.

Suburban Growth and Transformation (1950s–1990s)

Bartlett’s modern transformation began after World War II, when suburban expansion from Chicago reached further into the northwest. Improved roads, the rise of automobile ownership, and the construction of nearby highways (including Route 59 and later I-90) made Bartlett more accessible.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Bartlett experienced a surge in residential development. Farmland was gradually converted into subdivisions, schools, shopping centers, and public facilities. The population rose dramatically—from under 3,000 in 1970 to more than 24,000 by 1990. The village began investing in infrastructure, expanding public services, and annexing land to accommodate its rapid growth.

The construction of the Bartlett Metra station further boosted the village’s appeal for commuters, providing direct access to downtown Chicago via the Milwaukee District/West Line.

Community Building and Cultural Development

Even as Bartlett grew in size and population, village leaders worked to maintain its sense of community. A strong parks and recreation program was developed, along with civic spaces, sports leagues, and family-friendly amenities.

In 1991, Bartlett built a new Village Hall, reflecting both its growth and its investment in public service. The Bartlett Public Library District also expanded its facilities to serve the growing population.

One of the most notable cultural developments in recent decades has been the establishment of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, a traditional Hindu temple completed in 2004. It is one of the largest Hindu temples in the United States and symbolizes Bartlett’s increasing cultural and religious diversity.

21st Century: Modern Suburb with Small-Town Values

By the early 2000s, Bartlett had transitioned from a rural village to a full-fledged suburb, yet it retained its emphasis on preserving green space, community identity, and responsible development. The village adopted planning practices to manage growth, protect natural areas, and promote walkable neighborhoods.

Bartlett’s park system grew to include over 30 parks and 400+ acres of open space. The Bartlett Park District, formed in 1964, continues to operate a range of facilities including pools, fitness centers, golf courses, and nature preserves.

Economic development focused on maintaining a balance between residential and commercial uses. While Bartlett does not have a large industrial base, it supports a range of local businesses, restaurants, and service providers. Efforts to revitalize the historic downtown district continue to enhance the village’s character and pedestrian appeal.

Bartlett Today (as of 2025)

As of 2025, Bartlett is home to approximately 42,000 residents. It remains a family-oriented, community-driven suburb known for its good schools, safety, and high quality of life. The village is served by multiple school districts and is home to Bartlett High School, part of Elgin Area School District U-46.

Bartlett continues to be a diverse and welcoming community, with a wide range of cultural, recreational, and volunteer opportunities. Annual events such as the Fourth of July Festival, the Heritage Days Parade, and seasonal farmer’s markets help foster strong community ties.

The village also continues to prioritize sustainability, with programs for conservation, recycling, and energy efficiency in municipal operations. Local leadership remains focused on planning for the future while respecting the village’s history.

Legacy and Outlook

From its roots as farmland and a railroad stop to its role as a vibrant, modern suburb, Bartlett’s history is one of steady, thoughtful growth. Its ability to adapt—while preserving its village values—has helped it maintain a unique identity amid the rapid suburbanization of the Chicago area.

As Bartlett moves forward, it continues to blend tradition and progress, ensuring that it remains not just a place to live, but a place to belong.
