Fox River Grove, Illinois, is a scenic village nestled along the banks of the Fox River in McHenry and Lake counties, about 40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. Indigenous Roots and Early Settlement
Long before European settlers arrived, the area around Fox River Grove was home to Native American peoples, including the Potawatomi, who utilized the river for transportation, food, and trade. The Fox River, with its abundant fish and fertile banks, was an important resource and gathering place.
In the early 19th century, following the Treaty of Chicago (1833) and the forced removal of native populations, settlers from the East Coast and parts of Europe—particularly German and Czech immigrants—began to arrive. These settlers were attracted by the rich farmland, timber, and access to the Fox River.
The area remained sparsely populated for decades, characterized by farming, milling, and modest riverfront commerce.
The Arrival of the Railroad and a New Identity
The transformation of Fox River Grove began in earnest with the arrival of the Chicago and North Western Railway (now part of Metra’s Union Pacific/Northwest Line) in the 1850s. The rail line connected the area to Chicago, providing an easy route for city dwellers looking to escape urban life.
By the late 19th century, Fox River Grove had become a popular summer retreat, especially for Chicago’s Bohemian (Czech) community. The river, scenic woods, and rolling hills offered an ideal location for outdoor recreation.
One of the village’s most iconic landmarks during this era was the Fox River Picnic Grove, established in 1902 by Bessie and Eman Krepel. It quickly became a major attraction, featuring dance halls, dining, boating, and swimming. Thousands of visitors would arrive by train on weekends and holidays to enjoy the Grove’s festivities.
Incorporation and Development
Despite its popularity as a resort destination, Fox River Grove remained unincorporated for decades. It wasn’t until 1919 that the village was officially incorporated, with a population of about 200. Incorporation allowed residents to begin shaping local ordinances and infrastructure to meet the needs of both permanent residents and the growing number of vacationers.
Through the 1920s and 1930s, the village flourished as a seasonal destination. Lodges, inns, and summer cottages were built throughout the wooded hills and along the river. Recreation remained central to village life—boating, fishing, and picnicking defined the area’s character.
Decline of the Resort Era and Suburban Growth
Like many resort towns in the Midwest, Fox River Grove’s tourist-driven economy began to decline in the mid-20th century. The rise of the automobile, changes in vacation patterns, and the growing appeal of distant travel destinations lessened the area’s draw as a weekend escape.
As the tourism industry waned, Fox River Grove gradually transitioned into a residential suburb. Following World War II, the village experienced steady population growth. Cottages were winterized or replaced with permanent homes. Subdivisions, schools, and local businesses expanded, and the village began to resemble more of a commuter town than a resort area.
In the 1950s and ’60s, with increased development pressure from the expanding Chicago metropolitan area, village leaders worked to modernize municipal services, invest in infrastructure, and manage growth while maintaining the area’s natural charm.
A Tragic Event: The 1995 School Bus-Truck Collision
One of the most tragic events in Fox River Grove’s history occurred on October 25, 1995, when a school bus carrying students from Cary-Grove High School was struck by a Metra commuter train at a railroad crossing. Seven students were killed, and many others were injured.
The incident received national attention and prompted major changes in rail-crossing safety protocols, both in Illinois and across the United States. It remains a deeply somber moment in the village’s history and has had a lasting impact on transportation policy and school safety measures.
21st Century: Community, Preservation, and Connectivity
By the early 2000s, Fox River Grove had firmly established itself as a desirable residential community. With a population nearing 5,000, the village prioritized quality of life, public safety, education, and the preservation of green space.
Parks such as Lions Park and Picnic Grove Park continued to offer recreational opportunities along the river. The village invested in trail systems, beautification projects, and downtown enhancements to support local businesses and foster a walkable, connected community.
Metra service remained a critical asset, offering a direct link to downtown Chicago and making Fox River Grove an attractive home for commuters.
The village also worked to manage development while protecting its natural landscape. Hills, ravines, and riverfront areas remained central to the community’s identity, and zoning policies aimed to retain open space and avoid overdevelopment.

As of 2025, Fox River Grove is a thriving village of just over 4,800 residents. While small in size, it is known for its strong civic spirit, excellent schools (including District 3 and District 155’s Cary-Grove High School), and scenic location.
Fox River Grove continues to balance its historical roots with modern demands. Community events, such as the annual fireworks display and local festivals, bring residents together and honor the village’s legacy of gathering and celebration.
