A Brief History of Fox Lake, Illinois (Through 2025)

Fox Lake, Illinois, located in Lake County and partially in McHenry County, is a village known for its scenic lakes, resort-town legacy, and evolving identity as a residential and recreational hub. With its rich history tied to tourism, boating, and railroads, Fox Lake has grown from a quiet natural area into a lively community that balances waterfront living with small-town charm.

Native American Roots and Early Settlement

Long before European settlers arrived, the area now known as Fox Lake was home to Native American tribes, primarily the Potawatomi. The region’s many lakes, wetlands, and forests provided ideal conditions for hunting, fishing, and seasonal camps. The extensive Chain O’Lakes system—15 interconnected lakes—was a vital resource and travel route.

In the early 1800s, after Native American tribes were forcibly removed following a series of treaties and conflicts, European-American settlers began arriving. Early settlers were primarily farmers and trappers who appreciated the area’s natural resources and proximity to water.

As settlement expanded through the 19th century, the region remained largely rural, with small farms and cottages dotting the shoreline.

The Railroad and the Rise of the Resort Era

The turning point in Fox Lake’s history came in the early 20th century, with the arrival of the Milwaukee Road railroad. In 1902, the railroad extended service to the area, making it accessible from Chicago. This transformed Fox Lake into one of the most popular resort destinations in the Midwest.

Chicagoans flocked to Fox Lake and the surrounding Chain O’Lakes region for weekend getaways and summer vacations. Hotels, dance halls, lodges, and boat rental businesses sprang up rapidly. Cottages were built along the lakefront, and some families returned year after year, forming generations of seasonal residents.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Fox Lake was known for its vibrant entertainment scene—boating by day, dancing and socializing by night. The Mineola Hotel, built in 1884 and expanded in the early 1900s, became an iconic landmark. Its massive wooden structure and lakeside location made it a centerpiece of social life and tourism.

Incorporation and Village Development

Fox Lake was incorporated as a village in 1907. With the population growing and tourism booming, the village began establishing municipal services, including police, fire protection, and basic infrastructure. While much of the development was driven by seasonal visitors, a permanent residential population also took root, supported by local businesses and service industries.

Throughout the mid-20th century, Fox Lake remained a popular destination, though its resort-town status began to evolve. Advances in air travel and interstate highways led many vacationers to seek new destinations, and some of the grand hotels and dance halls faded away. Still, Fox Lake maintained its appeal for boating, fishing, and weekend recreation.

Post-War Growth and Suburban Expansion

Following World War II, Fox Lake began transitioning into a more residential community, while retaining its recreational appeal. The rise of car travel made commuting more feasible, and new neighborhoods began to emerge.

While many lakefront cottages were still used seasonally, more families began converting them into year-round homes. Subdivisions, schools, and commercial developments grew, and the village’s population steadily increased. Fox Lake also annexed nearby areas over the years to expand its borders and tax base.

Despite growth, the village preserved its strong connection to the water. Public marinas, boat launches, and lakeside parks were developed to maintain access to the Chain O’Lakes, and boating culture remained central to local life.

Challenges and Revitalization (Late 20th – Early 21st Century)

In the late 20th century, Fox Lake faced challenges common to many small towns: economic shifts, aging infrastructure, and the need to modernize public services. While the village remained a draw for summer tourism, the decline of older resorts and underused lakefront properties prompted discussions about redevelopment.

Beginning in the 2000s, village leaders began working on plans to revitalize Fox Lake’s downtown and lakefront areas. Infrastructure improvements, zoning updates, and economic development efforts were put in place to attract investment and make the community more vibrant year-round.

Transit also remained important: Fox Lake serves as the northern terminus of Metra’s Milwaukee District North Line, offering commuters direct access to downtown Chicago. This connectivity helped support residential growth and positioned Fox Lake as a viable home for workers in the broader metro area.

Fox Lake Today (As of 2025)

By 2025, Fox Lake has grown into a village of over 10,000 residents, with a balanced identity as both a waterfront recreation hub and a full-time residential community. The Chain O’Lakes remains the village’s crown jewel, drawing thousands of boaters, anglers, and tourists every year.

Recent years have seen continued downtown revitalization efforts, with new restaurants, boutiques, and public spaces emerging along Grand Avenue and near the Metra station. Village-sponsored events—such as parades, festivals, and fireworks—help foster a sense of community and bring life to the waterfront.

Environmental protection has also become a key concern. The village works in coordination with local and state agencies to manage water quality, prevent shoreline erosion, and maintain the health of the lakes and wetlands. Sustainability initiatives, including stormwater improvements and conservation education, are becoming more visible in local planning.

The historic Mineola Hotel, long closed and in need of major restoration, remains a subject of debate and interest. Many in the community hope to preserve or repurpose the iconic structure as part of Fox Lake’s historic legacy.

  1. CCIM Designation (2000): In 2000, Arthur earned the prestigious Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation from the CCIM Institute. This designation is awarded upon completion of a rigorous graduate-level curriculum and demonstration of extensive qualifying experience. Recognized globally, CCIM professionals are regarded as experts in commercial and investment real estate.

  2. CAI Designation (2010): In 2010, Arthur completed the Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) program at Indiana University. This graduate-level program focuses on asset liquidation and auction strategies, and is the highest professional designation in the auction industry.
